Construction Design Trends

Trending Designs

As a contractor, trends play an important role in design work. Our clients come to us usually wanting a design that is unique. Clients are inspired by the features they see in magazines and through media. Commercial property owner’s needs and desires also change with business growth and their customer’s needs.

Here are some of the trends we have spotted this year, and that will certainly be part of the design agenda of the upcoming years!

INDUSTRIAL STYLE

A commercial design trend that has been around for a while and isn’t going anywhere! From metal furniture to exposed utilities, from brick walls to raw wood elements. Industrial-style offices pair well with the biophilic trend, creating a unique and creative environment full of personality. Biophilic design is a concept used within the building industry to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment through the use of direct nature, indirect nature, and space and place conditions.

Exposed Steel Structures

High strength, ease of transport, and simplicity of assembly are among the many major advantages of steel. But while utilitarian steel structures tend to be hidden by architects, working with exposed steel can lead to attractive results. Steel not only brings lightness to a design but can also offer different expressions of color and texture, depending on the treatment of the material.

Glass Blocks

Once a “less than first-class” material, glass bricks are making a comeback. This once outdated 80’s architectural style is an aesthetic worth reviving. Pioneering contemporary architects have begun using this unique material in new and distinctly modern ways.  Used to create sleek and minimalist bathrooms, industrial bars and restaurants, or even experimental urban facades.

GREENERY & NATURE

Additional Outdoor Space

In lieu of the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more businesses turn to contractors to expand their outdoor space. In particular, the restaurant industry has taken a swift pivot to focus on developing or adding patios, rooftop areas, and more to accommodate al fresco diners.

Interior Gardens

Indoor gardens were one of the hottest trends of 2020, and the trend shows no signs of subsiding in popularity in upcoming years. Direct outdoor space may not be in the cards for every building, but in those cases, we’re still seeing commercial designers leaning into the idea of bringing nature inside. The popular design trend of incorporating plants, living walls, and other greenery into the space, as well as natural features like wood and stone. Interior gardens bring life to commercial spaces. Commercial interior “plantscapes” are designed aiming to stimulate creativity of the staff working.

BRIGHT DESIGNS

Color Monochrome

Monochrome easily creates harmony — because it’s really all one base color. By choosing a monochromatic color palette, you have your unifying element from the start. ‘Monochromatic’ simply means is that you take one basic color and apply color therapy to create a range of hues by playing with the various tones, shades, and tints that can be created from the original.
